This page lists group we know of that work on translations. Feel free to add the ones we missed.
Translation groups
- Translating Open Agriculture Research to Local Language, especially Ethiopian local languages.
- Translations Journal, A digital online journal for translators, interpreters, and interested friends of the translation industry. Hidden are great link collections from the early days of the internet.
- Translators without Borders is a non-profit working towards a world where knowledge knows no language barriers.
- Reddit Translator is a subreddit where people help translate texts.
- Humanetech Translation is a group of volunteers translating materials on Humane Technology into many languages.
Language diversity groups
- Masakhane is a grassroots organisation whose mission is to strengthen and spur NLP research in African languages, for Africans, by Africans.
Education
- Science in School aims to promote inspiring science teaching across Europe. For this reason, we publish articles online in several European languages.
- Scientix works on science education in Europe and translates its materials in many European languages.
- Doing It Together Science, which ended summer 2019, had a The Citizen Science Translation Hub.
- Astronomy Translation Network of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) is translating education and public outreach on astronomy.
Translation part of mission
- Wikimedia is the parent organization of the multi-lingual encyclopedia Wikipedia. Their Wikidata database would be a good place to store information on translations in a way wikipedians can add and edit. They have a good system to translate the software of Wikipedia and many related projects into many languages. Maybe a similar system could be useful for collaborative translating works of science.
- COAR, Confederation of Open Access Repositories has translated the controlled vocabulary used by repositories into many languages.
- European Language Grid (ELG) provides a lot of information on language technologies in Europe, including some on (machine) translation.
- European Language Equality Project (ELE) is a sister project of the ELG, also EU funded, but more interested in the policy and legal side of the multi-lingual problem.
Members of Translate Science
- AfricArXiv is a community-led digital archive for African research and stimulates the translation of scientific articles and abstracts. About 2000 local languages are spoken in Africa.
- The consultancy group Access 2 Perspectives works on language diversity.
- Whose Knowledge: A global campaign to center the knowledge of marginalized communities (the majority of the world) on the internet.
- The Open Climate Knowledge is working on a WikiData-based system that helps with reading difficult text by translating important terms.
- The open post-publication Grassroots Review system plans to link to available translations on the review pages.
